music to grow by

finally a cd for kids that won't make their parents squirm. fresh out of brooklyn comes "rocket ship beach", a lovely, lively nostalgia trip led by former del fuegos rocker dan zanes.

billed as "new music for kids and kid sympathizers," it's filled with old-time folk classics like "a bushel and a peck" and "goodbye old paint" sung as you've never heard them sung before.

guest artist sheryl crow gives "polly wolly doodle" a soulful punch, while dancehall's rankin' don raps out "father goose". and suzanne vega's crooning on "erie canal" gives it our vote for song most likely to succeed as a single.

another nice touch: the cd's packaged in what looks like a toddler's chunky book. the colorful drawings are credited to donald saaf, who doubles on banjo. "rocket ship beach" the first release from festival five records, has landed at record stores throughout the city.
